As a therapist, I often come across terms that explain one feeling or another. I have heard of burnout and overwhelm and have explored more about these throughout my studies and work, but ‘modern-day malaise’ is a slightly different spin on current thinking. When I came across this term the other day, it instantly made sense. Over the years, I have observed this weird sense of malaise in many people.

When we think of burnout, we see a wholly wrung-dry person with little to give any task and near complete exhaustion. For overwhelm, we might think of a person who runs on adrenalin, fuelled by anxiety with tunnel vision. Modern-day malaise, however, seems to be between burnout and being overwhelmed but not depressed; it’s more of a low-level ‘can’t be bothered’ stress response, maybe feeling run down and stuck.

Essentially, malaise can prevent you from moving forward in your career or taking new opportunities, and it is not always recognised by your colleagues, managers, or HR staff as you keep going to maintain a sub-par approach to your work.

The symptoms of modern-day malaise in the workplace:

  • Disinterested in the work you are doing, not feeling relevant or connected.
  • The hours on the job seem long and tedious, or you don’t feel any alignment with the brand or company values.
  • There is a weird disconnect between you and other employees in the workplace. Oddly, others may feel the same, but you don’t discuss it; instead, you remain in pluralistic ignorance of each other’s work wariness.
  • Your malaise is coming home with you, affecting your home life.
  • Additional tasks can lead to a sense of overwhelm, and you reject further work if offered.
  • You become easily distracted and lack focus and concentration. You may notice that you are browsing the web or social media more to avoid work.
  • Your work-life balance is no longer working to your benefit, and this may be due to work deadlines, increased workloads, or tiredness.
  • Fatigue starts as you begin your working day, and maybe you need frequent breaks to stay alert.
  • You feel resentful emotions but don’t know why or what for.
  • You recognise that you are not yourself and may react to others or avoid certain situations.
  • You may have brain fog when taking task instructions and cannot concentrate in meetings.

Although these are standard features of more developed mental health issues, they can also be the initial symptoms of malaise. As malaise lingers, further issues could occur. You may not feel comfortable speaking to someone at work about your

The first thing to do is speak to someone. Maybe a Mental Health First Aider, Human Resources or even a trusted manager should be able to signpost you to the right people to get help.

If you cannot speak to anyone in the workplace, speak to a trusted family member or friend away from work or your GP. Once the malaise is recognised, you can make a plan to action change, but while you continue to allow the malaise to drift on, you may not make any changes, also leading to possible further mental health issues.

If you feel you cannot speak to anyone, then maybe take some time to consider your options for your time off. Consider what is bothering you: a colleague, a manager, the work itself, or something else. Do you feel you cannot speak out or that it is hopeless to expect change? Consider your options, even a job change.

You may already be feeling the effects of other more clinical mental health issues like burnout, stress, anxiety, or low mood, or you may be feeling more physical symptoms like digestive issues or fatigue and just not be recognising the connection. Try keeping your energy levels up by adjusting your diet to more regular and healthful meals or getting the proper rest.
